Assignment 3 - RechargePod: Personal Space
Scenario:
This project is a continuation of the previous projects. With the design principles, language and keywords all figured, you are to design a personal space for you that serves as a short-term recharge hangout. The design should be unique and innovative and reflect the activities proposed.
Objective:
- To apply the knowledge of design principle, formal organization and variation to design ideas
- To display creativity throughout design process and come out with innovative design solution.
- To show anthropometrics and ergonomics understanding in personal space.
- To illustrate and present ideas with proper scale and proportion using the right tools and technique.
Park I chose for my space:
Arches National Park is a US National Park in eastern Utah. It is home to over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. It contains the highest density of natural arches in the world.
Passive Activity I chose:
Aerial Silk a type of performance in which one or more artists perform aerial acrobatics while hanging from a fabric. Performers climb the suspended fabric without the use of safety lines, and rely only on their training and skill to ensure safety. They use the fabric to wrap, suspend, fall, swing, and spiral their bodies into and out of various positions. Aerial silks may be used to fly through the air, striking poses and figures while flying. Some performers use dried or spray rosin on their hands and feet to increase the friction and grip on the fabric.

- To show anthropometrics and ergonomics understanding in personal space.
- To illustrate and present ideas with proper scale and proportion using the right tools and technique.
Tasks:
Without losing the the design identities and language from the previous transformation series (project 2), you are now to explore and create interesting space to accommodate activities for personal use.
Park I chose for my space:
Arches National Park is a US National Park in eastern Utah. It is home to over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. It contains the highest density of natural arches in the world.
The Balanced Rock
The Double Arch
The Organ, an impressive sandstone tower
The Double O Arch
Passive Activity I chose:
Aerial Silk a type of performance in which one or more artists perform aerial acrobatics while hanging from a fabric. Performers climb the suspended fabric without the use of safety lines, and rely only on their training and skill to ensure safety. Some performers use dried or spray rosin on their hands and feet to increase the friction and grip on the fabric.
Active Activity I chose:
Pole dance combines dance and acrobatics centered on a vertical pole. This performance art form takes place not only in gentleman's clubs as erotic dance, but has also recently gained popularity as a mainstream form of fitness, practiced by many enthusiasts in gyms and in dedicated dance studios.
Main Inspiration

Light Sculptures
Butter Paper Inspirations & Sketches:
For Crit 1:
TIGHT SPACE: PASSIVE ACTIVITY
How do you rest and relax?
Draw out all the posture and MOLD a space that exclusively fit for this activity using the same design language from the previous project.
EXTENDED SPACE: ACTIVE ACTIVITY
How do you access and roam the rest of the space?
Think of ONE main activity (other than normal daily activity) you would be doing in the pod. IMAGINE and design the fixture and fittings needed to accommodate this activity.
SPACE & FUNCTION: With proper circulation, the space has to be designed creatively and specifically to suit the function. You must show unconventional and innovative ways that you can experience the activities in a well-designed space.
LIMITATION: The maximum perimeter of your floor area is 16m2. You are free to explore the formation. Split levels are permitted but not layered. Maximum height is 8m. Fill in the space with furniture by using the same language (built-in) to accommodate the activities. Explore simple but creative and practical solutions that are functional. Include aesthetic, ergonomic and functionality in the design.
Process are to be shown by series of mock-up model and final model once design is approved. (Scale 1:20)
Pinup at Crit 1
Exploratory Models at Crit 1
For Crit 2:
1. With the final model done, you are to proceed with orthographic drawings (plan, section, elevation, perspectives & isometric) of your design. (Scale 1:20)
2. Layout a presentation board (4 A2 size) compiling all of your design process. Composition should include inspiration, design transformation, character, anthropometric + activity and orthographic drawing of the lair. Give your presentation a title.
3. Presentation should be minimally rendered in only monochrome tone.
Requirements:
Format: A3 butter paper of research / study, ideas and design thinking process for tutorial and to pin-up at every critique session.
Tutorial Sheets
FOUR (4) A2 size final Presentation composition layout.
Mock-up model & Final Model
Sketch file folder showcase all design progress.
Mediums: Pen of different lineweight for drawings.
Watercolour OR marker + pencil colours render (monochrome).
WHITE Modelling card / board and other approved model
making materials on A3 size mdf board base.
