Assignment 1 - Collapsible Project

4 weeks. 30%

Furniture is the mass noun for the movable objects intended to support various human activities such as seating and sleeping. Furniture is also used to hold objects at a convenient height for work (as horizontal surfaces above the ground), or to store things.

Collapsible [meaning]; object is designed to be folded flat when it is not being used OR capable of being folded up and stored.

This project challenges designers to rethink their roles and contemplate issues that are affecting lives around the world today. In face of rising natural disasters, economic uncertainties and over-population issues, can furniture today be designed to go beyond its aesthetic functions and coexist with the current environment?

Task Description:
You are required to design a dual-function furniture that transforms into a compactable unit which can be stored in a small space when required. The unit must be easy to pull apart or be collapsible and include a moving function that should be in between 3’ x 3’ perimeter. Project considerations also include size, aesthetics, construction, shape, movement and ergonomic and userfriendly. Materials that are allowed in this project are corrugated board, wood pallets, frames or plywood. [1 or combined materials]
